After a container has been locked, it can only be opened if you have a key with the same id in hand. Furthermore, a key can be used to remove a lock with the same id from a container by using it on the container while sneaking.<ref>I.e. holding shift and right-clicking on the container with the key in hand.</ref> This will drop the paired lock.
