			Amidst severe internal turmoil and infighting, the SPP's immediate predecessor, the New Progressive Party, fractured in 1997, with most of the members turning the party into the Social Progressive Party, with a smaller subset creating the left wing, socially conservative Democratic Socialist Union. The fracture came just months after reran elections saw the NPP win just 4 seats, and barely keep their status as the main opposition party in the Senate.
