Monke Island (from Kyawcenni monke /mɔɰ̃t.kɛ/ meaning dense) is an island in Kozdenen, located east of Vansterèl and forming part of the separation between the Gulf of Kozdenen and the Central Sea. Monke Island is also a province of Kozdenen under the name Monke Province, and is Kozdenen’s largest province by area.

History

Monke Island was first settled on the fourth of thirdmonth 2025 by Lux Moniridia. Later that day, it was incorporated into the Kingdom of Kyaw Cen in the Treaty of Yija as an organised territory. Lux proceeded to Amuj the island, constructing numerous buildings in Classic Neo-Amujan architecture style across the island.

On the twenty-third of fourthmonth, Lux proposed handing her governorship to Rivulé Rainworld following discussion in the private Kyaw Cen discord server, which Rivulé subsequently agreed to. In the following months, Rivulé renovated most buildings on the island to have proper roofves & corners and deforested most of the northern portion of the island.

On the twenty-seventh of eleventhmonth, Rivulé semi-jokingly proposed a Kozdenen annexation of the island in order to construct prisons there. While initially not intended to be serious, Marcy approved the idea of Kozdenen annexation and discussion continued from there. Rivulé proposed forming a condominium between the two nations, however both Marcy and Pleb disapproved the idea. On the twenty-eight of eleventhmonth, Rivulé passed an executive order to make the island a vassal of Kozdenen in some way. As per the Terrafirma Bill in Kozdenen, in order to be annexed by Kozdenen, Monke Island would need to hold a free and fair referendum. Discussions of annexation died down for a few days, until Rivulé expressed desire to obtain a Kozdenen passport, which Pleb suggested could be easily acquired if the island was annexed. A referendum was then started on whether Monke Island should be ceded to Kozdenen or not, which was criticised for being undemocratic and unfair due to the lack of a "no" option. According to official sources, the referendum ended with 100% of people who did not opt out of the referendum voting to be annexed. Rivulé also proposed splitting the island north and south, with the Northern portion going to Sofao Tâsi, who had expressed desires to expand Hycenon onto the island. The split was approved by the Sofao Tâsi government, but did not go into effect due to the lack of support from Kozdenen or the Kingdom of Kyaw Cen. As a compromise, a portion of land in the northeast of the island has been perpetually granted to the city of Hycenon while still remaining part of Kozdenen on a ŋational level.

On the seventh of festivemonth, Rivulé abdicated the throne to her sibling, Shelf Rainworld. The transfer of power took place peacefully at 4PM AEST. Both Rainworlds lost their lives on March 28 due to complications from a case of mute evasion. As there was no one appointed as successor, the position is currently vacant, with the Kavakkorae currently occupying the island following the resulting crisis.

Government

Monke Island is one of Kozdenen’s five provinces. However, ever since its annexation by Kozdenen, it has been granted certain autonomies unique to it, in order to largely preserve the system of government that existed prior to the annexation.

Monke Island is governed by a parliamentary autocracy with a Governor-Monarch. The Governor-Monarch is appointed by the previous Governor-Monarch prior to their death or resignation, and is a position held for life. The Governor-Monarch has the power to propose and veto legislation, dissolve parliament, appoint court justices, and appoint the government cabinet. Legislation may also be proposed by the Parliament, which is democratically elected by citizens of Monke Island every year. Currently, as the most recently reigning Governor-Monarch was suddenly killed without a clear successor, the position is vacant.
