Rokaselan calendar

The Rokaselan calendar is the timekeeping system used by the Rauratoshan Kingdom.

Mechanics

There are technically three versions of the Rokaselan calendar: the main calendar, the modified calendar, and the divine calendar. The original calendar is the one used in the modern day - although the standard for non-Pezen uses of the Rokaselan calendar is the modified calendar, Nguhcraft lore allows for the original calendar to be preferred. The modified calendar still exists, but in the current revision of Rauratoshanian lore, it is exclusive to the Illumiŋati cǝŋspiracy theory. The divine calendar is used as well, but only as a reference for durations.

Original

Divisions and leap years

The Rokaselan calendar separates each month into 12 months. The first six months have 31 days, and the last six months have 30 days. However, the last day of the 12th month is only included if the number of days between vernal equinoxes is 366. The Rokaselan calendar separates each year into 12 months. Leap years are inserted chiefly using a 33-year cycle, so that 1 Sairairita (an auspicious and important day) is predictable. Specifically, Parfarita 30 is added every four years, but after the eighth leap year, the cycle is delayed by 1 year. Mathematically, this means if the year modulo 33 is divisible by 4, and is not 0, a leap year occurs.

Further corrections to this system have been proposed, because over the course of nearly 2500 years, vernal equinox timings change, the mean tropical year length changes, and drift accumulates to cause the vernal equinox to miss. The civil calendar of Rauratoshan works around the problem by inserting another leap year if over an entire 33-year cycle, the vernal equinox happens on 2 Sairairita, and skipping the next leap year if over the same period the vernal equinox occurs on the last day of Parfarita - such that the year is better described as the number of vernal equinoxes and that date. Rauratoshan still recommends using regularized years of length 365.2͞4 days in calculations of, for example, astronomical observation.

Naming

Years are named based on the currently ruling "dynasty." A word that references the dynasty is chosen by the first monarch to rule in the dynasty. This word may be changed as well, regardless of if a new ruling family takes the throne. The current dynasty as of Gregorian year 2025 is referred to as "Kanata", chosen by King Irirusta II when his family, House Mohito, rose to power in Gregorian year 1925. Before those are the dynasties Peska and Dúrisa, which were held by the same family, but the years leading up to Peska 1 were seen as a turning point in the straits of Rauratoshan after the fall of the Empire of Karan, hence the change in name.

Regardless of the name used, the year number is treated as an ordinal number - that is, "100(th year of) Kanata" or "2438(th) cycle year". Therefore, it typically ends with some variant of  -sha. The Gregorian dates in the below table assume that the beginning of Drawn to AfterLife takes place in February 2025.

The primary epoch of the Rokaselan calendar is 2436 years before the present of Drawn to Afterlife; this is referred to as "1 MK" (where MK stands for "misha kótan" or "cycle year"), and supposedly is named for when the royal regalia of Rauratoshan were gifted to the first king.

The name implies the creation of the world in Yukacan, which occurred well before that, but there is a secondary epoch, exactly 7776 years before the primary epoch, which is supposedly the date of the creation of the world. Interestingly, despite the fact this date would surely be in the divine calendar, scholars assert that the royal regalia were created "exactly 40,0000(31,104)₆ seasons after Selshan Téshika Téraza Télíta arrived to the chaotic earth"; thus the secondary epoch is based on the standard calendar, as it actually follows seasons. Years between this epoch and the primary epoch are counted normally, as "1 RK, 2 RK ... 7775 RK, 7776 RK, 1 MK" (where RK stands for "rému kótan" or "dream year").

Years before the primary epoch are also simply referred to as "kugya kótan" ("years ago"); this applies regardless of if they fall within Rému Kótan or not.

Modified

The modified Rokaselan calendar only differs from the original in the placement of leap years. The modified Rokaselan calendar uses the same leap years as the Gregorian calendar. This does not see use in Drawn to Afterlife, and its existence is not confirmed there. However, this modified Rokaselan calendar does see use in other properties that include the Rokaselan calendar.

Divine

The divine calendar is the earliest version of the Rokaselan calendar, said to be given to the kingdom by Selshan themselves. It uses a strict 360-day year of exactly 12 months of exactly 30 days, and counts from the secondary standard epoch (the beginning of Rému Kótan). Divine dates are essentially an early form of Unix timestamp, as days, months, and years don't have names. Instead, the date is simply given as "EE|CCC|YY|MM|DD", where EECCCYY is the seximal representation of the number of years after the epoch, and MM.DD is the month and day in that month.

In Rokasela, it is often expected that birth certificates and building deeds list the date of construction in the divine calendar, followed by the date in the standard calendar. The epoch of the two calendars is the same, though.
