Puna Iti is an interior sea of the Pua region of Thasusa that is distinguished geographically from Puna Nui by an island. The seas have a difference in salinity as well, leading to a difference in water coloration caused by algae variations.

The sea is entirely contained within the lands of Pua and its waters are considered to be within Pua's exclusive economic zone.

Etymology

Puna Iti gets its name from the Maori words "puna" meaning "puddle" and "iti" meaning "little".
