The city of Baarzenstad is located in Tardigradia that was originally founded and settled by the Fishdom of Fishland but is now under the collective ownership of the Ŋibraltar Army Treaty Organization (ŊATO).

Etymology

The city gets its name from its founder Fishland who, like other cities within the former state, gave it a name in Dutch as part of its naming convention. Baarzenstad as a name is made up of two parts, baarzen, the plural of baars, meaning 'perch' and stad, meaning city.

History

The history of Baarzenstad can be divided into three separate eras.

Early History

Baarzenstad got its start as a colony of Fishland who settled in the area on 24 July, 2024. The small port did not receive that much infrastructure and remained a relatively undeveloped piece of land for most of its early hisotry.

Post-Ŋeicide

As Fishland fell in the Ŋeicide of 25 January, 2025. Baarzenstad became an independent city as well as terra nullius for the rest of the year.

ŊATO Occupation

Come 10 January, 2026, the Ŋibraltar Army Treaty Organization (ŊATO) expresses interest in the former Fishlandic territory and seek to acquire it. They have a valid claim to the territory arguing that Fishland was a member of the organization from 3 December, 2024, up until its dissolution. ŊATO, under its short ownership of the piece of land, has greatly expanded Baarzenstad from being a small port on the sea of Thevs to a bustling economic center in the region as well as one of the most heavily guarded locations in the world. The organization's future Headquarters is planned to be located within the city.

Geography

Baarzenstad is a coastal city with access to the sea of Thevs and shares a maritime border with ŊATO founding member Xtrakva and located not too far from member Keltechra.

City Planning

The city is made up of four districts who get their names from their elevation relative to one another, with one getting its name directly from a geographic feature. The low, middle and high districts are connected via a central staircase.

Low District

The low district is the only district with direct sea access and as such houses the port of Baarzenstad. A post office for the city is located at the port.

Middle District

The middle district, or "mid district" consists mainly of a road going north-south to the southside of the central staircase. Developments are still in the planning phase.

High District

The high district, or "upper district" is the main center of the city. Home to a plethora of shops, restaurants and cafés. The square, nicknamed "Perch Square" by Secretary General Vÿl, features a large mermaid statue overlooking the sea. The southernmost building in the district is the Baarzenstad town hall, where the mayor's office is located.

Mountain District

The fourth and final district gets its name from Mount Olymfish, the tallest point of Fishland. It is home to the, as of yet under construction, main ŊATO base, affectionally given the nickname "Tower Coast" by General Þumfe.
