Zotazil (Hurga ker Maja: Zotazil [ˈzotazil]), properly the Second Imperial Colony of Zotazil in Nguhcraft (Hurga ker Maja: Thadin Imparas Soltom ker Zotazil tar Tol Arga [ˈθadin ˈimpaːɹɾas ˈsoltom kɛːɹɾ ˈzotazil taːɹɾ tol ˈaːɹɾɢa], is nominally a holding of the Second Empire of the Maja, but is functionally independent due to unforeseen technical complications. It is located on the Zotakihira Archipelago (Hurga ker Maja: Zotakihira [zotaˈkihiɹɾa]) in the Nalinakal Sea (Hurga ker Maja: Waiscirak Nalinakal [ˈwajʃiɹɾak naliˈnakal]), the northwestern-most significant body of water in Nguhcraft.

Etymology

While zota can be literally translated as 'axis' or 'dimension', its usage in Zotazil is a bit more complicated, implying not just directionality, but the needle of a compass, the centrality of Zotazil in the lives of its people, disconnected from the Second Empire, and the new lines along which the people of Zotazil must now think. Meanwhile, zil translates simply as 'city'.

History

When the Imperial Federated Navy vessel Candar ker Inakal ([ˈt͡ʃandaːɹɾ kɛːɹɾ ˈinakal], 'Sword of Fortune' or 'Sword of Peace') found itself in what would later be called the Nalinakal Sea, its crew celebrated the unexpected discovery of a new tol and made preparations to set up the first settlement, though an apparent and frustrating malfunction in their electronics' ability to receive radio signals dampened the mood somewhat. However, when their portal opened into a hellish realm of lava and unfamiliar monsters rather than connecting to the Imperial Portal Network, the mood shifted fully towards anxiety. They surmised that the portal was malfunctioning as well, and while some thought that the discovery of a heretofore unknown portal-accessible region could be a boon to the advancement of science, a lack of incoming goods and new settlers, or ability to return home, coupled with an inability to connect to the System - the computational infrastructure which connects the Second Empire and provides automation of many functions - proved too worrying.

With no guarantee that they could find their way back home on the Candar, the crew convened in council and after long hours of discussion, came to the deliberation to stay, build a new life, and hope that one day, they or their descendants might be able to find a way to connect to the Portal Network or the System. With that decision, the settlers founded Zotazil.

Geography

Politics

Zotazil is managed directly by its citizenry as a horizontal federation of councils in a typical manner for the Second Empire of the early 11th Millennium. Normally, even a small colony such as this would have at least one Sysadmin responsible for maintenance of local System architecture, however since connecting to the System is impossible in Nguhcraft, the position of Sysadmin and a nascent Sysadmins' Council have been formally dissolved.

Balijom is a villager settlement in federation with the councils of Zotazil for the purposes of trade and mutual defense.
