Alternate Slumian (ASm: Ewislun /e.wi.slɯn/) is a language written in Ewislunkli and spoken in Alternate Slumia. It is an evolution Modern Slumian with heavy influence from Lanetian, both of which were spoken in Slumia, outside of Nguhcraft.

Phonology

Consonants

Labial Alveolar Palatal Velar-Glottal
Plain Palatalized
Nasal m n /ɲ/ ⟨nj⟩ ŋ*
Plosive p t k
Fricative f s h
Liquid w l /lʲ/ ⟨lj⟩ j
Trill r

*only appears in codas

Word final nasals are all romanized as ⟨n⟩. Nasal distinction in codas is non-phonemic due to nasal assimilation. Word-final nasals usually assimilate to the next word or, if followed by a vowel or a pause, default to [n]

Vowels

Front Central Back
Unrounded Rounded
Close i /ʉ/ ⟨y⟩ /ɯ/* ⟨u⟩ /u/ ⟨yo⟩*
Mid e ə /ɤ/ ⟨eo⟩* o
Open a /ʌ/ ⟨ao⟩*

*appears as a result of umlauting, may either be romanized as the phoneme without umlaut with "o" after it; /ɤ/ ⟨eo⟩, or as the phoneme without the sound change, but with the umlauting diacritic; /ɤ/ ⟨ë⟩. The only exception is /ɯ/, which can occur either as a historical /u/ or as an umlauted /i/ and is always romanized as ⟨u⟩ for consistency, even if it occurs as a result of umlauting.

Any vowel except ə can be nasalized, which is romanized with a tilde. In digraphs, the first letter gets the tilde. If spelled with the umlaut diacritic, the tilde should go over the umlaut.

Diphthongs

Any vowel except schwa may appear in a diphthong with /ʊ/. That's romanized as a ⟨Vu⟩ digraph, where V is the romanization of the first vowel.

Writing

In this article, for readability, a romanization is included alongside excerpts. This romanization is described in the phonology section. Usually, Alternate Slumian should be written using the Slumian Semisyllabary.

Notes

  1. Unlike the Alternate Slumian language, ŋation or people, it is actually okay to refer to the writing system as simply "Slumian" or just "Slunkli"
