Vowels

Remÿsian is unique when it comes to Morytic languages as it features a nasal equivalent to every oral vowel. Nasal vowels are written with ogoneks.

Vowels
Front Central Back
Close i ~ ɪ <i> y ~ ʏ <y>
ĩ ~ ɪ̃ <į> ỹ ~ ʏ̃ <y̨>
u ~ ʊ <u>
ũ ~ ʊ̃ <ų>
Mid ɛ ~ e <e> œ <ÿ>
ɛ̃ ~ ẽ <ę> œ̃ <ÿ̨>
ɔ ~ o <o>
ɔ̃ ~ õ <ǫ>
Open a <a>
ã <ą>

There is also the letter Y̊ ẙ which used to write the vowel sound /ʉ/ in old and middle Remÿsian, however, /ʉ/ gradually shifted toward /œ/ in late middle Remÿsian but the letter was kept around to differentiate homophones. In more modern spellings, ẙ has been completely removed from the alphabet.

Diphthongs

Remÿsian has 24 diphthongs (twelve oral, twelve nasal). The letter combinations <ij> and <uw> as well as their nasal equivalents are not diphthongs but rather long vowels /iː/ and /uː/ respectively. This vowel length is phonemic, an example of phonemic length is Kut (to turn) and Kuwt (to reveal). Additionally, in certain dialects, <yj> has become a long /y/.

Stress

Unlike other Morytic languages, Remÿsian has flexible stress. Stress is unmarked and has to be learned.

Grammar

Word Order

Unlike most Morytic languages who are SOV or SVO, Remÿsian is a VSO language. In Remÿsian, the verb is initial and the subject is often skipped entirely through context.

Pronouns

While most Morytic languages have heavily inflected pronouns, Remÿsian pronouns remain relatively analytical, having only nominative and accusative forms.

Nominative Pronouns
Pronouns Singular Paucal Plural
First Person Wej Wij Wu
Second Person Nej Nij Nuw
Third Person Animate I Ij U
Inanimate Mej Mij Mu
Abstract Tej Ti Tu
Impersonal Dÿ Ri Ru

Nouns

Like other Morytic languages, Remÿsian is very compound-heavy. A noun tends to have multiple suffixes to denote what role the noun serves.

Noun Suffixes
Suffix Meaning Example Notes
-ÿ Thing Tuwÿ
/ˈtuː.œ/
a tangible idea (a plan)
Often used with abstract nouns/concepts to turn them into a concrete thing that can be interacted with. A notable example is in the language name Remÿvej where the turns the idea of Rem into a thing used for interactions. It is a very important suffix as with it you can make a word like Remÿžij meaning country of Remÿs.
-dÿ Abstract/Concept gjaldÿ
/ˈɟal.dœ/
a non-physical mountain
Used to turn an otherwise physical object into a non-physical one. Used for concepts of things. Compare 'legejl' (human) to 'legejldÿ' (humanity).
-šiw Grouping gjalešiw
/ˈɟa.lɛ.ʃiʊ̯/
A group of mountains (mountain chain)
-gejl Type/Species vejgejl
/ˈvɛɪ̯.gɛɪ̯l/
A type of mushroom (fungus)
-žew Doer / person who is Ketrejwežew
/kɛˈtɾɛɪ̯.ʋɛ.ʒɛʊ̯/
Xtrakvan
-wÿ Augmentative Rrÿfwÿ
/ˈrœf.ʋœ/

-čį Diminutive Nejlčį
/ˈnɛɪ̯l.tʃĩ/
Small/short river
-čÿ Place Čǫčÿ
/ˈtʃɔ̃.tʃœ/

Verbs

Remÿsian, like other Morytic languages, is agglutinative and makes use of several suffixes to mark person, number, tense, aspect and mood among other things all on verbs.

To explain the verb system, the word ÿnt (to climb) will be used as an example.

Person Marking and Number

The subject is marked with a suffixed vowel.
