Puna Nui is the larger of the two interior sea of the Pua region of Thasusa that is distinguished geographically from Puna Iti by an island and connected to the Djobom Sea by the Djobom Strait. The two Puna seas have a difference in salinity as well, leading to a difference in water coloration caused by algae variations.

Three nations have coastlines with the sea. East Pua, West Pua and Xarslasja.

Etymology

Puna Nui gets its name from the Maori words "puna" meaning "puddle" and "nui" meaning "large".
