Totally not Tuvan

Mörgül is an undeciphered and extinct language potentially spoken in Miŋejácár. Its existence was revealed to the world at the Twelfth UŊ Meeting on 27/4/2024 by Hilja. Following this, the linguists Elisa of Fishland and Kakavasha of Hentzo would analyse it to determine its affinity.

Corpus

The Corpus of Mörgül consists of the book after which the language is named, as well as the names of a handful of tools, all found in Ŋájaþáw, Miŋejácár.

Мөргүл

Tools

  • A trident named Хар Аянга
  • A sword named Зрлэг Хааний Хумс, translated by Seo as ‘<unknown> royal nail’

Analysis

Due to the fact that all known attestations are in the Cyrillic script, it was initially postulated to be a Mary-Moldovan language. This was quickly refuted by Mary, however. On the 28th, Elisa suggested the language belonged to a previously unattested family of Miŋejácáric languages, but that it possibly showed influence from Mary-Moldovan languages as well. Using her knowledge of this family, she suggested the language to be ergative-absolutive, as the apparent nominative form of the word for I began with m-. In addition, she stated the language showed clear evidence of vowel harmony.

Based on Extranguhcraftial knowledge, she was able to begin deciphering some of the lexemes, such as тей, meaning ‘hill’. She and Kakavasha then slowly began writing a full translation of Мөргүл. Kakavasha noted during this writing that Mörgül appeared to possess long vowels as well as geminates, and discussed whether the distinction between е and э was mainly qualitative or mainly length-based.

After her analysis, Elisa asked JANVS, author of the Mörgül book and presumed sole current speaker of the language about his opinion on the language and whether he had any more documentation.
