Patra, officially the Duchy of Patra (Śácamþaśá: qmiLjISo nrAtpa Pátran Śájełmiq, IPA: (Pátran dialect) [pɔːtrɐn ɕɛːjɪθmix]; Jutish: Heertochdom Patra) is a country in Thasusa bordering the Hilja sea and a far-flung maritime territory of Maraśa in the west, Xarslasja in the south and east, and the Tanzangi colony of Mosas in the north. Though it has its own government, it is ruled under a real union with the Kingdom of Jotlond, together forming the Jutish Realm, and the Jutish Parliament has ultimate authority over their laws and constitution. The day to day functions of the head of state are typically performed by a viceroy appointed by and acting on behalf of the Jutish Monarch. The ŋation seems to have an abnormally high rate of crime, particularly theft.

History

Ancient

(This section is written from an archaeological perspective. For the real events as they actually unfolded, see Pais Transanguino Ranitino and The Great Heist.)

The Ancient Patran Civilization is known to have existed prior to the conquest as an independent culture spanning the western third of former Þunan Qumreá, in Patra and Ájásiq. No attestation survives of the Ancient Patran language, and any evidence for its existence at all only remains in a set of substrate loanwords in the Pátran and Ájásin dialects of Śácamþaśá. Evidence from early records indicates that raids from Ancient Patra were a major problem for the then-nascent empire of Þunan Qumreá, with the Temple to Miŋe in Fájaþáw having even been partly destroyed by Patran raiders. This led to a very long period of intense warfare in the jungles of Ájásiq to pacify the Patrans, named in period Þunan Qumreáń literature as the "March to the Sea". After the conquest and abandonment of the old center of Old Patra (in Ájásiq, now northern Xarslasja), the city of Pátran Niw appears to have been founded as a new hub for the civilization. Eventually, the slow-burning jungle war escalated into a major campaign after a particularly large series of raids, during which the Patran civilization was conquered and destroyed.

Reá period

After the conquest, Pátran Niw was sacked and destroyed, remaining a mostly unpopulated ruin for much of the early Reá period. However it would later begin to rebound, repopulated by settlers from Ájásiq and the Śácamþanized descendants of the Ancient Patrans, with the city becoming an important port for commerce between mainland Þunan Qumreá and the colonies in Miŋejácár. During this time the city saw a significant amount of development, with the ancient platform farms (which show evidence of having been burned during the conquest) being rebuilt, and an ancient archway being remodeled and converted into a second Allay Café location which still stands today. The hills separating Patra from the rest of Ájásiq and the stronger substrate influence of Ancient Patran would result in the emergence of a distinct Pátran dialect of Śácamþaśá, closely related to but distinct from Ájásin.

Modern day

Ńápińe and Warlord period

During the early stages of the Ńápińe, Patra and Ájásiq were something of a base of support for resistance against the military regime that took control of the Reá following the deposition of Rijyc Śiłja and the Ŋiuŋyw, with a critical naval battle that resulted in the regime's collapse happening at the Ájásiq canal. Following this, Patra would be ruled by a long succession of warlords and chieftans, none of them ever controlling the city for very long before being deposed by rivals.

Formation of the Duchy

It is under this backdrop that foreign powers would begin to eye up chunks of the lands of the Śácamþań and draw the chaotic Warlord Period to a close. Eager to return to Thasusa and not miss out on a chunk of the lands she once ruled, Queen Seo of Jotlond hatched a plan: she would offer the warlords and rulers of the lands from Pátran Niw and the coast up to the hills an opportunity to swear an oath of fealty to her in exchange for significant political autonomy and rights; thus was the Duchy of Patra created under real union with the Kingdom of Jotlond (and thus the Jutish Realm created). However, upon its formation (and in spite of all the oaths), she found that the Duchy did not actually control the whole country, with control being limited to the city of Pátran Niw and the Ashway (a road linking the western territories of Þunan Qumreá to Þunan Ŋáce), and this would inaugurate the start of the ongoing Bandit War.

Footnotes

  1. Patra has two official state flags: the Union flag (Jutish: Ferênigingsflag), and the Ríksflag which is identical to the state flag of Jotlond. Also to note, the banner of Patra never appears in isolation, it must always be beside a banner of the Realm.
  2. Jutish: Patrandiew
  3. Śácamþaśá:pAijALSi arI nrAtpa Pátran Reá Śiłjaipa
  4. Exchange rate is pegged to the Jutish kroon.
