The National Forest is comprised of the northern Xu Arslau Desert, the Painted Desert, and the acacialands and forests of northern Yavapai County. The town of Clifton is almost completely surrounded by protected Tonto Forest land.
The Forest also contains geographic features such as the Mogollon Rim, the Vortexes, and Mazatzal Peak. Cave Creek National Park is a subdivision within the Tonto National Forest.
